Dr Aurélie Goineau, University of Southampton, UK

Aurélie Goineau is specialised in the ecology and taxonomy of benthic foraminifera. She is interested in how benthic foraminifera respond to various natural and anthropogenic stressors, but also in proxy calibration for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. She completed her PhD at the University of Angers in France where she studied the ecology of benthic foraminifera on a continental shelf in the Mediterranean Sea (Rhône prodelta). After her PhD, she experienced teaching at two French universities, and then jumped into the deep-sea! She is now doing a post-doc at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton in the UK where she works in an area in the abyssal eastern equatorial Pacific where nodule mining activities are likely to happen in the future. She aims to assess benthic foraminiferal faunas diversity, species composition and distribution in the area and across the Pacific in order to estimate their potential vulnerability to deep-sea mining.
