Although he started out as a palaeontologist (his PhD thesis was on Devonian ostracods) he has slowly evolved into benthic biologist working mainly on foraminifera as part of a deep-sea benthic biology group at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. He has studied foraminifera in many parts of the world and he is interested in all the different kinds, but his main area of expertise is with the ‘primitive’, single-chambered forms that are commonly overlooked despite their abundance in oceanfloor sediments. Most of his time these days is occupied by a baseline study of benthic faunas in the eastern equatorial Pacific, where single-chambered foraminifera, including the giant xenophyophores, are particularly abundant.
